Mayor Charles Falcone
Joseph V. Reed and his wife Permelia commenced the infrastructure on
Jupiter
Island
in the 1930s, long before it became a Town. They were not the first residents, but they took the giant steps to create a unique and genteel community of friends who would be happy living together.
We became a town in 1953. No great changes erupted in the ensuing years. Today we have about 520 residences, just a few more undeveloped home sites and no aspirations to grow. We love our beautiful island, and strive to preserve its character and low-key ambiance. We resist the forces of civilization that press for bigger, grander and more opulent developments.
The five-member Town Commission is dedicated to preserving the character and core values of this very special place. More than sixty residents work on boards and committees to carry out government plans and actions in our town. This includes several boards and committees that enforce our Land Development Regulations, a Beautification Committee, an Arts Committee, a Scholarship Committee, and a Pension Plan Committee. We also have an Underground Electric Utility Conversion Steering Committee. Rarely will you find a community whose residents are more involved and committed to its wellbeing than here.
Jupiter
Island
is also a nature preserve. There are exotic birds of numerous species, armadillos and an occasional bobcat. Many species of fish abound along the shores of the
Indian River
and the
Atlantic Ocean
. Constant erosion requires that we restore our ocean beaches periodically, and thousands of giant turtlesLoggerhead, Leatherback and Greennest on them in the summer. And we love our trees, which are about all you will see if you drive through town.
Our new Town Hall and our separate
Public
Safety
Building
create pleasant working environments for the Town’s first rate professional staff. We have a strong management team, employ modern management techniques and technology, and try to run our government in a resident-friendly manner. We’re proud of our lovely island, and we love to live here!
